Stylin Saturday: Empty Walls? Fill them up!

Walls. I am guessing that you have lots of them in your dwelling (whether it be a big 5 bedroom mansion or a tiny little studio).
No matter where you live, having walls gives you opportunity to use your creative skills to sprinkle in some style!

First of all, I would like to encourage you to not fear the world of color! Adding a fresh coat of paint to a neutral space is probably the easiest (and cheapest) way to change the feel of a room. Just go for it....use small accessories like throw pillows or a stripe in your curtain for color inspiration!

Second, fill those walls with stuff! Just like a lovely lady with a brand new dress, a freshly painted wall is crying out for someone to accessorize it!! I have found some great ideas for wall displays all around the land.....magazines, friends houses, stores.....and tweaked them to fit the space that I have to work with! The best way to get started is to just keep your eyes open as you are going about your business in the world. Be intentional about noticing walls and how they are accessorized (even take a picture to remind yourself of things that you found to be beautiful)!

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Windowless wall? Hang one. You can find old windows at reuse shops, antique stores, sometimes goodwill....the more beat up the better.

Grab some kids and do some art. I had some kids in my life sit down with me to show me their creative skillz...when they were done, I framed them up and hung them in line like a little gallery. Without squashing their artistic flow, I set a few parameters for the final product by preselecting colors (I used acrylic craft paint from michael's....lots of colors to choose from), getting the right tools (I used Q-tips as the paint brush to minimize having an end result of a full page of brown blob....if you have ever painted with kids, you know what I mean), and giving each of them 1 required element (black polka dots) to tie all the pieces together.

Use anything as a picture frame or means of displaying photos. I purchased some cheap clipboards from the local office supply store and selected a series of photos to show off. You could hang them any which way, working with the space you have to maximize filling a wall in need of accessories!

Ok, get to work! Keep your eyes open for new ideas and then give them a try!

  1. I think if you came to my house, you would cry. After I got divorced, I couldn't stand to have any decorations anywhere. I think I am ready for things in my life again though. I love your blog. Maybe someday soon, I will become more decorative.
